June 8 Crossing America

Blacksburg, VA – Cedar Springs, VA Distance 88 miles

Today started with an exhilarating 3 ½ mile downhill called Nellies Cave Road was awesome I managed to achieve a speed of 49.9 mph may have gone a couple miles faster but had to brak efor a couple other riders.  I filmed the ride down, hope to share it with you after the Tech savvy kids show me how to do it.  Amazing to watch how easy it is
for this 20 something generation to maneuver around a computer as easy as riding
a bicycle, simply dazzles me.

Longer rolling hills today, the distance was a grind but completed it by about 4:00
PM.  However, we’re staying at a church camp, A.R.E. Camp, which sits almost two miles off the road.  We’re being shuttled in as the camp road is dirt and loose gravel not the kind of terrain for road bikes.  The first rider in broke a spoke and there was a good chance of falling on the loose gravel so Pepper decided to shuttle us all in.  While waiting for him to return a storm came up which forced us onto the porch of a home that sat right at the
road to the camp and paved road.  The young gal who lives there offered to let us sleep in her garage as they have allowed other riders to do, had a crew stay with them a couple weeks ago which was filming the Trans Am ride.  I’ll have to keep a lookout for that video when it’s released.

The A.R.E. Camp was beautiful, rustic and spread out.   They allowed us to sleep under a pavilion or in an open field since it had rained I chose the first.  It was nice and peaceful, managed to sleep reasonably well even being in a tent.  I’d mentioned to one of the caretakers I’d very much enjoy coming back to this peace of heaven.  She assured me all denominations are welcome and thus I would be welcomed back as a friend.   Nice!

Glad to see you post to your blog again. Sound like you’re adjusting to the rigors of the trip. Keep it going Frank.

Thank you John, the riding is not the hardest it’s the conditions and time frame for completing each day’s mileage which I’m finding more challenging.
