Biking across America: Briscoe looks to raise MS awareness

NEVADA — Frank Briscoe plans to ride his bicycle across America — a feat few have accomplished, but he’s determined to do it.

Symbolically and especially for the occasion, Frank’s bike is painted red, white and blue to honor America’s history and to commemorate his event. While he has never named any of his bikes before, he’s calling this one “Spirit” to represent our country and his adventure.

Briscoe’s journey begins June 1 when he leaves for the most demanding and ambitious adventure of his life. Over four months, Frank will bike more than 6,000 miles crossing 16 states. He will begin at the upper northwest Anacortes in Washington state and ending in Key West, Fla. It’s certainly not a route the average crow would fly. Instead, it’s a wandering path where his bike and body will take him as safely as possible.

“I look forward to be inspired by the grandeur and beauty of America, meeting the incredibly good folks who make our Country great, while exercising my body, mind and soul”, Briscoe said.

It’s the culmination of many things: A life-long dream, the challenge itself and raising money for charity. There’s also one more goal.

“I am celebrating my 65th birthday in a very big way by doing something huge and extraordinary,” Briscoe said.

Many years ago as a young Boy Scout, Briscoe read a series of articles in Boys Life magazine about a Scout who rode his bike across America and the seed was planted. He vowed he would someday do it.

“I never expected it would take me more than 50 years, but this is the right time and for all of the right reasons”, Briscoe said with grin.

Briscoe has decided to raise funds to help cure Multiple Sclerosis . This is not the first time Frank has decided to ride for MS. He has been raising money for MS research and a cure for more than six years.

“It’s becoming personal for me,” Briscoe says. “The Ozark region alone has more than 8,000 MS victims. I have come to know many of them over the years and have seen first hand their courage in coping with this debilitating disease each day. That’s why I am setting my fundraising goal as aggressively as the disease. My goal is to raise a minimum of $10,000.”
Briscoe has established a Website where those who wish to follow along on his trip can see his progrees and read about all of his biking adventures. Visitors to the site also will have an opportunity to purchase Say ‘No to MS’ socks. Proceeds from the sock sales go to the Ozark Region MS Society and toward Briscoe’s fundraising goal for the charity. The website “Old Guy on a Bicycle” can be found at http://www.oldguyonabicycle.com.

To donate to the MS Society, visit the Web site and click “Donate to MS” at the top of the home page and follow the directions or send a check payable to: National MS Society Mid America Chapter, write “Frank Briscoe” on the memo line and mail it to: Frank Briscoe, 11174 E. Nebo Hill Road, Nevada, MO, 64772.

Briscoe is also available to speak at clubs or organizations about his ride across America in exchange for a fair contribution to the MS Society. The 20-minute presentation will take viewers across his route and outline the various stages of his four-month journey.

Your note touched my heart and warmed my soul. Not to mention choked me up and brought tears to my eyes. There are so many kind and generous folks in the world. It’s so reassuring to know when so much news we hear is about the bad. God Bless the USA!
Thank you for the donation it was quite generous of you.
